Buhari, Other ECOWAS Leaders To Meet On Single Currency December 21st

Presidents of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) have agreed to meet on the twenty-first of December 2019 to consider recommendations on the proposed single currency regime for the sub-region.

Oetv News understands this was made known at the end of the meeting of Ministerial Committee of Ministers of Finances and Governors of Central Banks of ECOWAS on the single currency.

Nigeria’s Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, who is also the head of the committee, said the resolutions reached would be communicated to the Presidents’ Forum for deliberation and adoption on the 21st of December before it can be made public.

“We have ended the meeting, the report is ready for submission to our presidents who will be meeting in Abuja here on December 21.“In their meeting, the presidents will consider (the) recommendations of this meeting and the decision they will be taken will be reported to our countries,” she said.

Mrs. Zainab Ahmed also revealed that, only the Republic of Togo out of other ECOWAS countries met the primary requirements or criteria for achieving the target as it would be a tall order to beat the 2020 takeoff deadline as predicted earlier.

Mrs. Ahmed, however, reiterated the federal government’s commitment to the establishment of ECOWAS Central Bank.
